Crowns & Veneers Q&A
What is a Crown?
Dental crowns or caps are covers for an entire tooth, usually made of tooth-colored ceramic or porcelain, restoring it to its original shape and size. Crowns can be used to repair or correct a variety of dental issues. Common uses for crowns include covering and restoring decayed teeth and metal amalgam fillings with a more natural looking cover which matches and blends in with the patient’s other teeth. Crowns are also often installed as anchors for dental bridges or to protect teeth weakened by root canal therapy.
What are Veneers?
Veneers are thin, durable pieces of tooth-shaped porcelain which are bonded to the front of teeth to create beautiful smiles. Veneers are custom made for the individual and designed to present a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. They are tinted and shaped to match the patient’s surrounding teeth. Porcelain veneers are used most often because they are long lasting and stain resistant while still providing a natural look. Imperfections including gaps, stains, chips, pits and cracks are improved with veneers.
How are Veneers and Crowns Installed?
A patient typically needs to make two visits to the dentist for crown or veneer installation. During the first visit, the dentist thoroughly cleans and prepares the teeth. He or she will remove a thin layer of the tooth enamel to make room for the crown or veneer to fit snugly over the original tooth. Casts will be taken of the teeth and gums being treated. The casts are then sent to a lab where the crown or veneers will be made to fit the patient’s mouth exactly. A temporary crown or veneer will be installed while the permanent covering is made. At the second visit, the dentist will attach the crown or veneer to the previously prepared teeth with a strong bonding agent. The dentist will make sure the installation fits properly and will buff and polish it until it shines like a natural tooth.
